Technology Readiness Levels

Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) were developed by NASA to provide a common language and standard for technology development.

TRLs:

  • Consist of nine levels from basic principles through sucessful mission operations
  • Measure the performance maturity of a technology and its future maturation throughout the technology’s life cycle
  • Promote the understanding of performance risk in transitioning technology
  • Define technology maturity on an increasingly more complex deterministic scale
  • Have been widely adopted by the DoD

APT Corp., with our experienced staff and tools, conducts efficient and unobtrusive Technology Readiness Assessments independently or in tandem with normal program reviews. APT Corp. assessments are accomplished by a small team using normal program deliverables, supplemented by focused reviews of risk areas.

APT Corp's experience and assessment tools incorporate the complex inter-relationships of the DoD Acquisition Framework including program milestones and associated exit criteria included in the graphic below.
Technology Readiness Levels

TRL 9: Actual system proven through successful mission operations

TRL 8: Actual system completed and qualified through test and demonstration

TRL 7: System prototype demonstration in an operational environment

TRL 6: System/subsystem model or prototype demonstration in a relevant environment

TRL 5: Component and/or breadboard validation in a relevant environment

TRL 4: Component and/or breadboard validation in a laboratory environment

TRL 3: Analytical and experimental critical function and/or characteristic proof of concept

TRL 2: Technology concept and/or application formulated

TRL 1: Basic principles observed and reported
